9 Tips for Writing Relevant Job Ads

1. Use clear job titles

Your job titles must be realistic, detailed, and consistent with reality to be credible to qualified candidates. According to a study, 80% of candidates would feel discouraged from applying for a position if they felt that the title was not realistic.

For example, prefer “sales engineer” over “rockstar engineer.” Also, don't write “sales engineer” if you want to hire a call center agent.

2. Talk to candidates directly

Use vocabulary that is understandable and clear. Avoid jargon and confusing phrases. A significant proportion of candidates believe that complex and incomprehensible vocabulary is a discouraging factor when applying for a job. For example, don't write “Your role will be to “price” benefits and “brainstorm” on “propals.”

Before posting your offer, review the description to ensure it is clear and accurate.

3. Describe the tasks

Help candidates visualize a typical work day. Divide responsibilities into short, clear tasks. Candidates pay particular attention to job descriptions that describe daily tasks and specific responsibilities.

For example, avoid vague descriptions like “You will be in charge of the digital marketing department.” Instead, prefer specific responsibilities like: “Measuring ROI and KPIs” and “Monitoring social media accounts.”

4. Sell the post

Describe the benefits of the position and how the position contributes to the growth of the business. According to a study by Glassdoor, benefits and career development opportunities are among the main criteria for selecting candidates.

Example: Free company canteen, recognition from your peers, attractive remuneration, opportunity to participate in projects related to the company's strategy and to contribute to its development.

5. Offer testimonials (UGC and EGC)

Promote your employer brand in your offers by showing that it is good to work for you or by describing your values. According to a study conducted by Randstad, employers with a strong employer brand are 7 times more likely to retain qualified talent.

For example, include links to testimonials from your employees or photos of activities (the famous UGC that we are discussing). in this article, also called EGC), register on dedicated platforms that allow employees to rate their company and give objective testimony about life on the premises, and highlight the values of your company that contribute to a positive and fulfilling work environment.

6. Don't be too demanding

Have realistic requirements taking into account the position you are offering, its value within the company, and its remuneration. Employers that have realistic requirements in their job ads attract more qualified candidates.

For example, avoid “The candidate must have served as President of the Republic” for a gardening position.

Figure out what's required and what can be learned during the job, and include only essential skills in your ads. This will allow you to have a wider range of qualified candidates for the position offered.

7. Don't be negative

Swap negative phrases for more positive ones in your sentences. According to a LinkedIn study, job ads that use a positive tone are more likely to attract qualified candidates.

So prefer “Please note that this is a high-level position, so proven experience in field X is important” rather than “Candidates with less than 5 years of experience will not be considered”.

Be courteous and list the requirements of the job in a clear but positive tone, this will allow you to display a favorable image for your employer brand to all candidates.

8. Don't forget the structure

A good job description is both clear and appealing. Job ads that are easy to read are more likely to catch the attention of qualified candidates. So make sure your ads are easy to read.

Bulleted lists are easier to read than endless paragraphs. In addition, well-structured sections help to separate tasks from requirements, this helps to highlight the most important information for candidates and to help them better understand the position offered.

9. Respect the French Labor Code

To do this, your ad:

  • must be dated and must mention the name of the employer or recruitment firm in order to ensure transparency and credibility
  • must be written in French to be understandable by all potential candidates
  • must be accessible free of charge to not exclude candidates who cannot pay to access the offer
  • cannot contain allegations that are false or likely to mislead the candidate in order to respect legality and transparency.
  • must not discriminate against candidates for illegal criteria
